French actress, singer, and director Jeanne Moreau has passed away on July 31st, 2017 at the age of 89. Moreau was known for her roles in Francois Truffaut's The 400 Blows (1959) and Jules and Jim (1962), as well as voluminous other films. She was awarded Best Actress at Cannes in 1961 and received France's highest honorary order of merit, the Legion d'Honneur, from François Mitterrand in 1991. Moreau was born in Paris on January 23rd, 1928. Her 1964 singing record, Le Tourbillon (The Whirlwind), sold over one million copies and she went on to star in 40 films throughout her career. In addition to her film career, Moreau was a successful stage actress known for her performances in Jean Anouilh's Antigone (1947) and Eugène Ionesco's The Chairs (1951). Throughout her lifetime, Moreau served as a muse to numerous directors including Orson Welles and Luis Buñuel. Her strong presence and powerful performances inspired generations of filmgoers and continue to influence modern-day filmmakers. Moreau's sprightliness and incomparably-stylish personality will be remembered by film lovers throughout the world. She was the epitome of a true French actress and her life and works will remain timeless classics.
