Jessica Savitch, beloved television personality, passed away on October 23, 1983 at the age of 36. Jessica was a pioneering television personality, first making a name for herself in radio as a newsreader for KYW Newsradio. Following this success, she was hired by KYW-TV in TV news and became particularly popular among viewers. She moved onto NBC News subsequently, and was the first woman to co-anchor the NBC Nightly News in 1970 alongside John Chancellor. Her career in broadcasting was more notable still when she joined the national contemporary news magazine program Today in 1975. Jessica received critical acclaim for her work, and was the first female anchor to report from the White House. Jessica’s natural talent on camera, paired with her bubbly-like personality and professional passion for her work made her a household name. Her professional success was matched by her life, as she married Alvin B. “Hoppy” Hopgood in 1976. Sadly, Jessica’s life was cut tragically short, but her influence and legacy lives on with her many admirers. She will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
