Jimmy Doolittle, a pioneering pilot, renowned military leader and an air war hero, died on September 27th, 1993 at the age of 96. Doolittle was born in 1896 in Alameda, California. He joined the U.S. Army in 1917, received his pilot's wings in 1918, and served as an instructor at both air corps and naval aviation training schools. In April 1942, Doolittle led a daring raid over Tokyo during WWII, for which he received the Medal of Honor. In 1949, Doolittle was appointed the first U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff, a position he held until 1951. In this capacity he played a major role in reorganizing the air force from a tactical arm into a strategic arm. In the mid-1950s, Doolittle returned to active service as a test pilot, flying many of the jets developed during the Korean War. He was a recipient of numerous awards and decorations. Jimmy Doolittle will be remembered for his courage and remarkable accomplishments both in the air and on the ground.
