John Barrymore, legendary actor and iconic figure of Hollywood's Golden Age, died on May 29th, 1942 at the age of 60. Known for his commanding stage presence and renowned for his infamous drinking habits, Barrymore was an incredible force to be reckoned with. The eldest of three legendary actors born to Maurice and Georgiana Barrymore, John had an illustrious career which began on Broadway and blossomed in film. Having starred in more than 65 films, he achieved great success across diverse genres, from comedies to crime dramas. He received a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award in 1938 for his role in classic films such as Grand Hotel (1932) and Twentieth Century (1934). Though he spent his lifetime in the spotlight, Barrymore preferred a more private life. He was married twice and had two children. His death marks the end of an era, but his memory will live on in the hearts of his many fans and admirers across the world.
