John Conyers, a civil rights activist and U.S. Congressman from Michigan, died on October 27, 2019 at the age of 90. John Conyers was born on May 16, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan to his parents, John Conyers Sr. and Loretta Conyers. After receiving his degree in law from Wayne State University in 1958, Conyers quickly became immersed in civil rights activism and political advocacy, joining legendary activists like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. on marches throughout the country. In 1964, Conyers was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Michigan's 1st Congressional District. He remained a politician throughout his life, serving in the House of Representatives for an impressive fifty-three years and serving as a senior member of the U.S. Judiciary Committee, the Government Reform Committee, and the House Administration Committee. Throughout his life, Conyers worked to fight for what he believed in, never shying away from controversial topics like the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, and the impeachment of President Nixon. He greatly valued the importance of education, making it his mission to help ensure every child, regardless of race or economic status, had access to quality education. John Conyers is remembered for being a passionate advocate for justice and equality and leaving behind a lasting legacy as a civil rights activist and politician. He will be deeply missed.
