On December 8, 2016, John Glenn passed away at the age of 95. John Glenn was born in 1921 in Cambridge, Ohio, and graduated from New Concord High School in 1939. He received degrees in engineering with a minor in mathematics from Muskingum College in 1942. John served as a Marine Corps aviator during World War II and the Korean War, during which time he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross six times over the course of his combat tours. Later, he became one of the original seven Mercury astronauts, famously becoming the first American to orbit the Earth in 1962. After leaving the astronaut corps, he served as the US Senator from Ohio from 1974 to 1999. In 1998, at the age of 77, he became the oldest person to fly in space, when he served as a payload specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. John's life's work and impact will continue to live on.
