John Paul Stevens, beloved Supreme Court Justice, passed away peacefully on July 16th, 2019 at the age of 99. Justice Stevens became a Supreme Court Associate Justice in 1975, appointed by President Gerald Ford, and served until his retirement in 2010. His tenure of 35 years was the third-longest in the Court’s history. Throughout that time, he developed a reputation as one of the Court’s most liberal members, and wrote opinions articulating strong pro-civil liberties views. Before his appointment to the Court, Justice Stevens was an impressive legal mind. He graduated from the University of Chicago Law School in 1947, and went on to practice law in Chicago. He served as an Assistant Attorney General of the United States from 1952–53, and as a special prosecutor at the Watergate trial. President Richard Nixon also appointed him deputy solicitor general. His family and friends will miss his kind heart and wisdom. Justice Stevens’ memory will be remembered with great respect for years to come.
