Jorge Rafael Videla, a former leader of Argentina, has passed away at the age of 87. He served as the President of the Nation of Argentina from 1976 to 1981. During his tenure, Videla enacted numerous controversial policies while in office. He was convicted of human rights abuses stemming from the 1976-1983 “Dirty War” in 2009 and served time in various jails until his death on 17 May 2013. He was born on 2 August 1925 in Rostra, Buenos Aires, Argentina. As a youth, he joined the Argentine Army and rose to the rank of General before being appointed President of Argentina. In later years, following his conviction, he spent his remaining years in prison, where he died. He will be remembered as a leader of Argentina who was convicted of human rights violations as well as for his influence in the country’s history.
