Karen Dinesen Blixen, a renowned author and poet, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 7, 1962 at the age of 77. Dinesen was born to Wilhelm Dinesen and Ingeborg Westenholz in the city of Rungsted, Denmark in 1885. She was well educated and spoke fluent French, English, and Danish. Dinesen wrote a variety of books, including the seven volumes of her popular work, Out of Africa, which is a historical memoir from her time in British East Africa (Kenya) from 1914 to 1931 and is considered by some to be her most famous work. In addition to her books, Dinesen wrote numerous short stories, plays, and poetry, which were published in numerous magazines and newspapers. Throughout her career she was awarded many awards and honors, including the Grand Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog, granted by the King of Denmark in 1959. Dinesen will be remembered for her remarkable ability to captivate her readers through her vivid writing and imaginative storytelling. She will be deeply missed by her fans and family alike.
