Born in 1971 in Pyongyang, he attended school in Russian before attending the International School of Berne in Switzerland. He was held in the line of succession until 2001 when he was bypassed for his younger half-brother, Kim Jong-un, as the leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Following his father's death in 2011, Jong-nam remained largely out of the public eye. He kept many residences throughout the world, including Macau, Malaysia, and Singapore. He is remembered as an outspoken critic of the regime his father led and a proponent of economic reform in North Korea.
