Indian statesman and freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai passed away on November 17, 1928 at the age of 63. He was born to a wealthy and influential Hindu family in Punjab in 1865 and went on to study law, thereafter actively participating in India's struggle for independence. He was inspired by the teachings of Swami Dayananda and passionately strove to achieve a nation free of British rule with an emphasis on Hindu values, forming the nationalistic organization - ‘Lahore Arya Samaj’, among others. An outspoken public figure, he had a successful career in politics and was part of the British Indian legislative council from 1921-1922. He also served as the leader of the Indian National Congress party from 1919-1921. His efforts towards the Indian freedom struggle were painfully cut short with his death at Lal Bagh, Mandsaur, at the age of 63. He will be deeply missed by the people of India.

Life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it, a jealous, possessive love that grabs at what it can. But life leaps over oblivion lightly, losing only a thing or two of no importance, and gloom is just a passing shadow of a cloud. Yann Martel
