St. Clair Bayfield, a distinguished actor and attorney, passed away in his sleep on May 19, 1967, at the age of 91. After studying law at the Inner Temple in London, Bayfield began a successful career in the theater in the first decade of the twentieth century. He actively pursued a varied stage career for over sixty years, appearing in countless performances including the original London production of "Pygmalion," alongside the legendary actor and performer, Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree. Bayfield served in World War I in the 15th Battalion, the Middlesex Regiment, and was highly decorated for his service and gallantry. After receiving an honorable discharge from the army, he resumed his acting career, performing for many years at the Globe Theatre, London. Bayfield was known for his work in social causes and charities, helping to raise funds for numerous campaigns. He became a Companion of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George in 1947. In 1932, Bayfield married Sybil Thorndike, one of the foremost English actresses of the early twentieth century, in London. The two had been close friends since childhood. Clair Bayfield is survived by two sons, Christopher and Michael Bayfield. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a remarkable actor, and an exemplary public servant.
