Lester B. Pearson, one of the most influential political figures in Canadian history, died on December 27, 1972, in Ottawa at age 75. Born in 1903, Pearson was a distinguished diplomat, Prime Minister, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and statesman. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in seeking a peaceful solution to a dispute between France and the United Kingdom over the Suez Canal in 1956. After graduating from the University of Toronto in 1919, he attended Oxford University, where he received degrees in politics and economics in 1923. As a diplomat, Pearson served in posts in North America, the Soviet Union, and London, England. Before becoming Canada's 14th prime minister in 1963, Pearson served in a number of cabinet positions in the governments of Prime Ministers William Lyon Mackenzie King and Louis St. Laurent. He is fondly remembered for his work in foreign affairs, health care and the introduction of the Canadian flag. His legacy was and will be remembered as one of the most prominent figures in both Canadian and world politics. He is survived by his wife, two children and five grandchildren. He will be long remembered for his dedication to democracy, peace and social justice.
