John Peel, popular British Radio DJ, Broadcaster, and Music Producer, passed away on October 26, 2004 at the age of 65. John had a profound impact on the British music industry after becoming the first Radio 1 DJ in 1967. He went on to host beloved radio shows and programs such as BBC Radio 1's Home Truths and the BBC Radio 4 extravaganza, John Peel's Sunday Concert. He was also credited with discovering or championing acts such as The Undertones, Joy Division, and The Smiths. Born John Robert Parker Ravenscroft in except in Heswall, Merseyside in 1939, John began his career working in various record shops. He eventually began working for BBC Radio Lancashire in 1967, hosting a variety of programs through to the late 1980s, during which time he obtained his disc jockey licence. John's legacy lives on through his work, influence, and support of new music and talented artists. He will be greatly missed.
