American Film producer Louis B. Mayer passed away at age 73 on October 29th, 1957. Mayer was a pioneer in the film industry and was known as a savvy businessman who built his own studio – Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer – which became one of the leading movie production companies of its time. He was responsible for the production and distribution of many classic Hollywood films, including Ben-Hur, The Great Ziegfeld and Mutiny On the Bounty. Mayer moved to Canada in 1928 to begin his career in the film industry. He quickly rose to prominence and acquired several film companies, eventually merging them into MGM. Throughout his career, he became known for his management style and passion for creating quality cinema. Mayer was responsible for producing multiple movie stars, including Clark Gable, Greta Garbo, and Judy Garland. He also won three Academy Awards and a special Irving G. Thalberg Award. Mayer’s iconic career in the film industry will not be forgotten, as he will be remembered as one of the most influential figures in the Golden Age of Hollywood.
