On the 18th of August 1989, Luis Carlos Galán Sarmiento passed away at the age of 45. He left behind a legacy of courage and sacrifice. Born in 1944, Galán graduated from the University of the Andes in Bogotá, Colombia with a degree in law. He also served as a Representative of Santander in Congress, and in 1978 he was elected President of Liberal National Movement. Galán was recognized throughout Colombia for his courage as a liberal candidate in the presidential election of 1989. As his campaign started, he expressed his commitment to combating the influence of narcoterrorism and increased foreign investment in Colombia. Galán's dedication to justice and the rule of law was emphasized by the manner in which his life ended. On the night of August 18th, he was assassinated while giving a speech at a rally in Soacha. He departed from this earth too soon, but his inspiring example of courage and commitment to democracy will be remembered for a long time. Galán will be greatly missed, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of all Colombians.
