Luz Long

German long jumper (1913-1943).

Luz Long, the celebrated German long jumper of the 1936 Olympic Games, passed away on July 14, 1943, at the age of 30. Born in 1914, Luz showed promise as an athlete at an early age. In 1933, he entered the German national indoor long jump competition and finished in 2nd place. With this result, he qualified to compete in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. During the lawsuit between Jesse Owens and Luz Long, Luz advised Owens on how to best take advantage of the windy weather to optimize his jump. Luz went on to win the silver medal in the long jump competition. In 1941, Luz was conscripted into the German Army. He was later killed in action on Sicily in 1943. The memory of Luz Long will remain forever as an example of perseverance and sportsmanship. He is remembered and celebrated by athletes and fans around the world.
