Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th president of the United States, passed away on January 22nd, 1973 at the age of 64. Born in Central Texas, he attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College (now known as Texas State University) and served in the US Navy during World War II. He was elected for the US House of Representatives in 1937 and served as majority leader from 1953 to 1955 before becoming Vice President of the US under President John F. Kennedy in 1961. In 1963, after the assasination of Kennedy, Johnson became President of the United States. During his five year presidency, he implemented civil rights reforms, passed the Great Society social legislation, and increased US involvement in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the John F. Kennedy Profiles in Courage Award in 1971 for political courage. President Johnson is survived by his family.
