Mamie Eisenhower, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, namesake, and one of the nation's most renowned and influential first ladies, passed away on November 1, 1979 at the age of 82. Mamie Eisenhower, nee Mamie Doud, was born in Boone, Iowa, on November 14, 1896. She met future husband Dwight D. Eisenhower in San Antonio, TX, while he was stationed at Fort Sam Houston and they married in 1916. Known for her infectious energy and fondness for fashion, Mamie was famously the first First Lady to host a television broadcast from the White House. Her popularity and trademark sense of style made her the first presidential wife to receive regular media coverage and she graced the cover of Life magazine more than once. Her devotion to her husband was a hallmark of her life and the pair maintained a loving relationship throughout their marriage. Her passing is mourned by her two sons, John and Dwight D. Eisenhower II, five grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Mamie Eisenhower will be remembered as a warm and devoted woman who loved her family, celebrated fashion, and whose dedication to her country and the world of public service will continue to be a source of inspiration for many.
