Marcel Duchamp, an important figure in the art world, passed away on October 2nd, 1968 at the age of 81. Born in France in 1887, Duchamp moved to the United States in 1915. During his lifetime he was a painter, sculptor, chess player, musician, writer and author. The works of Duchamp challenged the accepted practices of the art world particularly with his concept of the Readymade. He pioneered the notion that the choice of artistic material became a central factor in the creation of a work. He also initiated the concept of the artist working from a distance by authorizing reproductions of his works to be created in his absence. Duchamp’s works are held in major museums and collections around the world and he remains an important influence in modern art. He will be remembered for his dedication to his craft and his willingness to challenge conventional norms in the art world.
