On October 23, 2011, the world of motorsports lost one of its brightest stars, Marco Simoncelli. The 24-year-old Italian was a beloved competitor and personality who professed a passion for the sport he competed in with unparalleled enthusiasm. A graduate of the Italian CIV Series, Simoncelli competed in his first full season of Grand Prix motorcycle racing in 2008, making his MotoGP debut with 125cc and continued forward in the 250cc class. In 2011, he joined the MotoGP World Championship after one year with the Gresini Racing Team. Known for his charismatic style, Simoncelli represented passion, exuberance, and an open heart to all forms of competition. He quickly became a fan favorite for his larger-than-life personality and kindness. Out of the racetrack, Simoncelli was active within the community, advocating and raising awareness for a number of charitable organizations. His career was tragically cut short on October 23, 2011, after a crash in the Malaysian Grand Prix. He is survived by his parents Paolo and Rossella, and by his girlfriend Kate Fretti. Marco Simoncelli will be greatly missed in the world of motorcycle racing and beyond.
