While in Amsterdam, Margot attended school and continued her studies despite the increasingly restrictive measures imposed on Jewish citizens. As the situation for Jews in the Netherlands deteriorated during World War II, Margot and her family went into hiding in July 1942 to escape Nazi deportation. They lived in a concealed annex above her father's business, where they remained in hiding for over two years. She and her family were ultimately discovered in August 1944 and deported to concentration camps.
