On April 23, 1992, the world mourned the passing of Satyajit Ray, one of the foremost filmmakers in Indian cinema. Born in Calcutta in 1921, Mr. Ray crafted some of the most celebrated films in Indian and world cinema. His contributions to the field are immeasurable, having written, directed and composed music for over 35 feature films in his lifetime. His influence has been felt across generations with acclaimed filmmakers who cite him as an inspiration. Mr. Ray's contribution to the world of cinema speaks for itself; his film Pather Panchali earned him worldwide critical success and is widely regarded as a timeless, classic masterpiece of world cinema. His Apu Trilogy, including Aparajito, would go on to reach similar resonance with audience and critics alike, earning him international awards and recognition. Mr. Satyajit Ray is survived by his sons, Sandip and Somnath, and will be remembered for his immortal contributions to the world of cinema and for providing countless captivating stories that have continued to remain in the collective imagination.
