Legendary actress and renowned humanitarian Martha Raye passed away on October 19th, 1994, having reached the age of 78. Born Margy Reed in 1916 in Spokane, Washington, Martha accomplished a remarkable list of feats, particularly in her ability to bring joy and laughter to those around her. From her six decade-long career in show business to her tireless work in support of the U.S. troops and Veterans of Foreign War, Martha continuously gave of herself selflessly for the benefit of others. Her charisma, comedic timing, and talent earned her a place in the spotlight, surrounded by admiration and respect as she entertained and inspired those around her. Along with her many awards and accolades, Martha earned the title of Colonel in the United States Marine Corps – a dedication to her chivalry for the armed forces. Her philanthropy reached a career high when she was appointed as National Chairman of the USO. In her final days, Martha left behind a legacy of accomplishment marked by an influential and admired career in show business, and an altruistic and fearless commitment to service that will never be forgotten.
