Martin D. Ginsburg, an esteemed professor of tax law, passed away on June 27th, 2010 at the age of 78. He was born in New York City in 1932 and went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania, Cornell Law School, and Harvard Law School. After obtaining his law degree from Harvard in 1958, he impacted the field of tax law through his work in private practice, in government, and as a professor at Georgetown University Law Center from 1981 until his passing. Martin co-authored the book Taxation of Income from Business and Investment with then-colleague and later Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan, and published countless papers, lectures, and writings throughout his academic career. In his years of service, Ginsburg received multiple honors and awards, such as the Attorney General's Award for Distinguished Service, the Tax Section Outstanding Service Award of the ABA, and multiple honorary doctorates. He was devoted to his family; he is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and his two children. He was also closely involved with several organizations throughout his lifetime, including the United States Tax Court Historical Society and Tax Analysts. Martin D. Ginsburg will be remembered for his tireless work in the field of tax law and for his dedication to his family and community.
