On January 20, 1994, Matt Busby, MBE, passed away at the age of 84. Throughout his life, Busby was a successful footballer and football manager, making an indelible mark on both sports. He was born Alexander Matthew Busby in March 1909 in a small village in Scotland, and began his career as a left-back for Manchester City in 1928. In 1934 he departed to manage Liverpool, spending four seasons with them. He returned to Manchester in 1945 and managed Manchester United for over two decades. During this time, he placed the team on the world stage and vastly improved its Flower of Manchester line-up. United were the first English team to win European Cup, doing so in 1968, and he helped the team to finish League Champions five times between 1951 and 1967. His methods of training and tactics earned him a reputation as one of the greatest ever football managers. He was awarded an MBE in 1968 for his services to football and was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002. Busby was widely known for his leadership and great character. He leaves behind a legacy within the world of football as one of history's most influential figures.
