It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maud Lewis on Thursday, 30 July 1970, aged 67. Maud was born Maud Dowley on March 7, 1903 in South Ohio, in Digby County, Nova Scotia. She was one of ten children in a farming family and she spent her early life in the area. In 1938, at age 35, Maud married Everett Lewis, a fish peddler. As part of their marriage agreement in 1938, they moved into Everett's small house at Marshalltown, near Digby, Nova Scotia. Maud soon decorated the house with her artwork despite her rheumatoid arthritis limiting her mobility. Maud's artwork was based on the folk art style, with bright colours and simple designs to transform everyday scenes of her and her husband's lives. She is best known for paintings of rural life scenes, including birds, cats, horses, houses, and oxen. Maud's work gained recognition around the 1960s and she began to sell her work locally. Soon, as her work gained in popularity, her paintings were sought by art collectors and curators, and she painted for most of her remaining years. Maud will be fondly remembered by her family and all those whose lives she touched.
