Menachem Begin, the sixth Prime Minister of Israel, passed away on March 9, 1992 at the age of 78. As a Prime Minister, Begin served from 1977 to 1983 and was the first native Israeli to hold the office. Born in what is now Belarus in 1913, Begin suffered the loss of family members when his home town Ruzhansk was destroyed in World War II. He made the journey to Israel in 1942 and became involved in the Irgun, an underground militia that attacked British occupiers. In 1948, Begin and his party, Herut, were elected into the first Knesset. He founded the Likud party and won the 1977 elections, becoming the first Likud Prime Minister. Throughout his career, Begin was renowned for his strong will and commitment to his beliefs. He was a devoted nationalist and held strong nationalist beliefs. On the international scene, Begin was a key player in the peace treaty signed with neighboring Egypt in 1979. Under Begin’s leadership, Israel fiercely defended against its enemies while making important advances in the arts. During his tenure, the country witnessed great economic growth. Menachem Begin left a lasting legacy on the world stage. He will be remembered for his dedication, keen political skills, and passion to ensure a strong Israel.
