On September 24, 2002, Mike Webster, 50, passed away. A four-time Super Bowl champion, Mike Webster was one of the greatest centers in NFL history. He was an integral part of the Steelers team from 1974 to 1988, playing in his beloved Pittsburgh for 15 of his 17 NFL seasons. He was named to the Pro Bowl nine times, was the NFL Man of the Year in 1985, an All Pro in seven seasons, and was a member of the 1970s and 80s All Decade teams. Mike Webster was also known for his passionate character and leadership. He was well-respected as a leader throughout the NFL by teammates and opponents alike, and was known for his sincere caring for the people around him. Mike Webster spent the last seven years of his life struggling with depression and dementia, and in 2002, he passed away due to the effects of chronic brain trauma. He was survived by his former wife, Pam; two daughters, Ali and Rachel; two sons, Colin and Garrett; and five grandchildren. He will be remembered for his immense impact and legendary status in the NFL.
