World-renowned Indian playback singer Mohammed Rafi (24 December 1924 – 31 July 1980) passed away at the age of 55 in Mumbai, India on 31 July 1980. Rafi was an iconic singer known for the vast repertoire of songs across multiple genres including Indian classical music, ghazals, bhajans, ghazals and Indian film songs. He is recognised as one of the greatest and most influential singers of the Indian subcontinent who was respected for his versatility and remained a major figure in the Indian music industry for the four decades spanning the 1940s to the 1970s. Rafi began his singing career at the young age of 13 and his impressive talent saw him gain instant attention and success. His extensive output of over 26,000 songs in 36 languages spanned several decades and earned him numerous awards including six Filmfare Awards and multiple awards from the Bengal Film Journalists Association and Government of India. Rafi's remarkable life and extraordinary career will be celebrated and remembered by his millions of fans and friends around the world.
