Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, beloved father, former Indian Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, and politician, passed away peacefully on January 7th, 2016, at 79 years old. Born in 1936, in Bafaluda, Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Sayeed had a successful and long political career. He was a leader in the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference for two decades, and also served two terms as Minister of Home Affairs in the state. In the 1990s, he founded the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party, and served as Chief Minister of J&K from 2002 to 2005 and 2015-2016. Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was known for his work on political stability and peace within the region of Jammu and Kashmir. He was awarded the “Sher-e-Kashmir” Indian National Award several times for his efforts to restore peace and harmony between India and Pakistan. He is survived by his three daughters: his eldest daughter is Mehbooba Mufti, a Member of the Parliament and President of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party; his second daughter Rubaiya Sayeed, who served as J&K’s Health and Medical Education Minister; and his youngest daughter, Safeena Sayeed. Mufti Sayeed will be remembered as a true leader and statesman. He will be dearly missed.
