Natalie Schafer, beloved actress and humanitarian, passed away on April 10, 1991, at 90 years old. Born on November 5, 1900 in Red Bank, New Jersey, Ms. Schafer showed an interest in acting early, fighting against societal conventions of her era to pursue her love of the craft. After attending Erskine College in South Carolina, she made the move to New York and quickly found success, appearing on Broadway in the late 1920s. Notable successes followed, including her work in films like Escape to Witch Mountain and the popular television show, Gilligan’s Island, in which she portrayed Mrs. Lovey Howell. She was also known for her many fundraisers and charitable donations, which included contributions to organizations like the United Negro College Fund, the Lighthouse for the Blind and the Motion Picture and Television Fund. Ms. Schafer will be remembered as an incredible woman whose work provided joy to countless fans and helped many causes. She will be deeply missed by family and friends.
