On February 22, 2026, Nemesio Oseguera Cervante, also known as "El Mencho", passed away at the age of 59. Born in 1966 in the Mexican state of Michoacán, Cervante rose to notoriety as the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of the most powerful and violent criminal organizations in Mexico. His criminal activities included drug trafficking, extortion, kidnapping, and murder. Cervante had a long history in the world of organized crime, starting as a member of the Milenio Cartel in the 1990s. When that cartel was dismantled, he founded the Jalisco New Generation Cartel in 2010 and quickly gained control of large portions of Mexican territory, expanding his influence through violence and intimidation. Throughout his life, Cervante was known as a ruthless and formidable criminal figure, with reports of him ordering the killing of rivals and innocent civilians alike. He evaded capture for years, despite being one of the most wanted men in Mexico, and was eventually arrested in 2015. However, he continued to run his cartel from prison, and even after his eventual escape in 2023, he remained a prominent figure in the world of organized crime. Cervante's death marks the end of an era in the Mexican drug trade, as he was one of the last remaining leaders of the old guard cartels. While his criminal actions caused immeasurable harm to countless individuals and communities, his death also brings closure for many who have suffered at the hands of his organization. He leaves behind a legacy of violence and corruption, but also serves as a cautionary tale of the destructive power of organized crime.

It is nothing to die. It is frightful not to live. Victor Hugo
