Nichelle Nichols, an American actress and mentor to aspiring space exploration professionals, passed away on July 30, 2022 at the age of 89. Her career began in the 1950s when she appeared in television roles, commercials, and theatre, performing with Duke Ellington. Ms. Nichols is best remembered for her leading role as Lieutenant Uhura in the popular 1960s science fiction television series, Star Trek, working alongside series protagonist William Shatner. In subsequent years, Ms. Nichols starred in several guest spots on television, movies and stage productions. On the big screen, she appeared in Diamonds Are Forever, Death Becomes Her, and many others. She also narrated the audiobooks of Frank Herbert’s Dune series. Ms. Nichols was a passionate advocate for women and African-Americans in the tech and science industries, and an iconic civil rights figure. Additionally she was a mentor and advocate for people with disabilities. She is survived by many friends and loved ones. May she rest in peace.
