Nicky Hayden, the 2006 MotoGP champion known by fans as the 'Kentucky Kid', passed away yesterday at the age of 35. The native of Owensboro, Kentucky, Hayden began his international racing career at the age of 17 in the AMA Supersport Championship as a part of Erion racing. In 2002, Hayden moved to Europe, first competing in the Superbike World Championship before joining Repsol Honda in 2003, partnering with then-champion Valentino Rossi to become the first American to compete in MotoGP since 1985. After his rookie season, Hayden worked his way to the top of the MotoGP rankings through his persistent determination and bold, gutsy riding style. He fought for the world championship until the closing stages before achieving his best outcome to date when he captured the 2006 MotoGP crown. Hayden raced in MotoGP for a further ten years, riding with Honda and then Ducati, before returning to American racing in 2015. He finished his career as an Honorary Indiana State Senator and was honored with a commemorative mural in his home town of Owensboro. Nicky Hayden was an amazing Grand Prix racer and an inspiration for many. He will be missed.
