Olympia Dukakis, an Academy Award-winning actress who starred in dozens of play, film and television roles, passed away May 1, 2021 at the age of 89. Ms. Dukakis, a Massachusetts native, began her career as a stage actor, performing at venues such as the Charles Playhouse and New Repertory Theatre. She was part of the original group of performers chosen for Athol Fugard’s “A Lesson from Aloes” in 1980. That same year, she debuted on Broadway in 'Social Security'. She would go on to appear in several television shows and films including 'Steel Magnolias', 'Look Who's Talking', and the cult classic 'Moonstruck', for which she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Ms. Dukakis was vocal about the lack of quality roles available for women and was a strong advocate for the LGBT community. She created the Whole Theater Company in Montclair, New Jersey where she served as Artistic Director and acted in numerous productions. In 2004, she was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in recognition of her work. Ms. Dukakis was predeceased by her husband, actor Louis Zorich, and is survived by her three children, Peter, Christina and Alexandra Zorich, and five grandchildren.
