Peacefully, at the age of 98, Otto von Habsburg passed away on July 4th, 2011. Otto was the longest serving Member of the European Parliament, Chairman of the Institute for Social Movements in Germany, and the Crown Prince of Austria-Hungary. Born on November 20th, 1912 in Reichenau an der Rax, Austria-Hungary, Otto's early life was marked by many befitting of an Austrian Archduke: A conservative Roman Catholic who was educated in Vienna, Innsbruck, and Graz. At the age of 18, Otto entered into politics, becoming active in the German Resistance to National Socialism--a cause which he worked towards for life. In 1961, Otto was elected to the European Parliament, and his strong positions in favor of European integration saw him become a leading voice in European Politics until his retirement in 1999. A civil rights advocate and a vocal proponent of increased dialogue between cultures across the world, Otto's life-long struggle against extremism will continue to be remembered for generations, both in his home nation of Austria and beyond.
