Pablo Neruda, internationally acclaimed poet and diplomat, died at the age of 69 on September 23, 1973. One of the most important writers of the 20th century, Mr. Neruda crafted a unique style of poetry, blending a variety of influences in a manner that was uniquely his own. His works brought a rare combination of beauty and satire, often exploring themes such as love, loss, loneliness and nature. His work became highly praised, leading to him winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1971. In addition to his writing, Mr. Neruda also had a successful career in politics, heavily influenced by his opposition to the oppressive regimes of General Pinochet and the Spanish Nationalists. He served as a senator in the Chilean Parliament and was appointed Director of Latin American Affairs by the Chilean government. His legacy will continue to be remembered, his works inspiring and influencing those of both the past and the present.
