Pat Buttram, a beloved and iconic actor of stage and screen, died on January 8th, 1994, at the age of 78. The Alabama native was best known for his roles in western movies and television shows. He began his career in acting in the 1940s and went on to star in films such as The Giant Gila Monster, Miracle of the White Stallions, Elvis Presley's Kissin' Cousins, Support Your Local Gunfighter, and Showdown at Eagle Gap. He was known for playing playing the roles of comical sidekicks and villains. Buttram was also a successful television star, being a regular on The Gene Autry Show, playing George A. Custer in the ABC series F Troop and appearing on the Roy Rogers Show as a narrator. Buttram continued to work until the end of his life, the last of his projects being the film Maverick with Mel Gibson. In 1971, he was bestowed the Golden Boot Award for making a wide-spread contribution to the Golden Age of Westerns, cementing his place as one of the greats in western entertainment. He is survived by his longtime wife Norma Varden, four grandchildren, and a ten great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.
