We mourn the passing of Pernell Whitaker, a professional boxer who died July 14, 2019 at the age of 55. He was born January 2, 1964 and was a four-weight world champion. Whitaker had an illustrious boxing career, having held world titles in four weight divisions for most of the 1980s and '90s. He won gold in the lightweight division of the 1988 Seoul Olympics and was named "Fighter of the Year" by The Ring magazine in 1989. In his professional career he had an undefeated run early in his career and achieved a professional record of 40 wins, draws, and 4 losses. Throughout his career, Whitaker won several titles including the WBA/IBF World Lightweight Title, WBC World Light Welterweight Title, WBA World Welterweight Title, and WBC World Super Welterweight Title. He is considered by many to have one of the best defensive techniques in boxing history. Whitaker will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and fans around the world. His memory and legacy lives on in the world of boxing.
