The entertainment world mourned the August 11, 1994 passing of British actor Peter Cushing, 81. He was best known for his roles in several classic horror films, playing such infamous characters as Baron Frankenstein and Van Helsing. Cushing was born on May 26, 1913, in Kenley, England. He trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and began working in theater. Moving to films in 1939, he soon earned a reputation for playing a wide variety of roles. His portrayals of the comically sinister and menacing characters found in much of his later work earned him a worldwide following among fans of the horror and science fiction genres. His film career spanned almost 60 years, from 1939’s The Captain’s Room to 1994’s Frankenstein Unbound. He also appeared in many television shows and miniseries, including Ivanhoe in 1958 and Sherlock Holmes in 1968. Cushing was a beloved and respected member of the entertainment industry, his loss being felt in homes around the world.
