Famed criminal defense attorney F. Lee Bailey has passed away at the age of 87. Born in 1933 in Massachusetts, Bailey went on to attend Harvard Law School, graduating in 1960. He passed the Massachusetts bar exam that same year and started his career as an attorney. He made a name for himself as a lawyer with a knack for getting controversial cases dismissed. Bailey practiced law for six decades, during which he represented high-profile celebrities and political figures in criminal proceedings. He worked on different cases ranging from O.J. Simpson’s attempted murder trial, to Dr. Sam Sheppard’s murder trial. His work ultimately earned him the title of one of the most influential lawyers of his era. In addition to his legal work, Bailey was also an author, writing nine books during his lifetime. These included works about the American judicial system and its problems. Awards and honors Bailey received throughout his career included the National Academy of Trial Attorneys’ Lifetime Achievement Award and the Thomas Jefferson Award given by the National Law Center. In recognition of his numerous accomplishments, Bailey will be remembered as a pioneering criminal defense attorney who pushed the limits of the law. He will be profoundly missed.
