Phil Harris, a beloved entertainer, veteran, and family man, passed away peacefully on August 11, 1995 at the age of 91. Born on June 24, 1904, Harris grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, and ever since he was a child he was hooked on show business. After high school, he left Nashville and served in the US Navy during World War II as a chief Petty Officer. After his time in the Navy he moved to Los Angeles, where he started a career in show business. Harris began performing in the 1930s and went on to spin a career that spanned decades. Over the years, he sang and danced on the radio, in vaudeville shows, and even in a few films. He also toured the US twice with a jazz orchestra. Throughout the years Harris became most well known for his role as a regular cast member on the Jack Benny radio program. He gained wider recognition during the 1950s, 60s and 70s with appearances in several films and later, television shows. Harris was known for his wit and charm, as well as his deeply held Christian beliefs, and was well-loved by his family, friends, and fans. He is survived by his wife and three children, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.
