Prescott Sheldon Bush, 77, passed away peacefully on October 8, 1972 in Greenwich, Connecticut. He and his family had a long legacy of public service that extended throughout the 20th century. Born in Columbus, Ohio on May 15, 1895, he was the eldest son of Samuel Prescott and Flora Sheldon Bush. After graduating from Yale University in 1917, he served as a first lieutenant in the infantry in World War I before returning home to pursue business and legal opportunities. He became a successful Wall Street banker and a founding director of Seymour stafford & co. in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1933, he was elected to the U.S. Senate as a Republican from Connecticut and served for two terms. As a senator, he was a staunch advocate for civil rights and his advocacy was recognized even after his retirement. In addition to his U.S. Senate career, Prescott Bush also became involved in many philanthropic initiatives. He was Chairman of the National Committee of the Boy Scouts of America from 1938-1942 and was later named Chief Scout Citizen. He also became an ardent supporter of the United Negro College Fund and the Slipstream Youth Foundation. He married Dorothy Walker in 1921. They had five children together: George Herbert Walker Bush, Prescott Sheldon Bush, Jr., Jonathan J. Bush, Nancy Bush Todd, and William H.T. Bush. Prescott Sheldon Bush is survived by his wife Dorothy, his children and many grandchildren.
