On January 3rd, 1981, the world said goodbye to Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone. Born to Prince Leopold of Battenberg and Princess Victoria of Hesse, she spent the majority of her life in service to the British Crown. Princess Alice served as the vice regal consort of Canada from 1940-1946 as the wife of the then Governor-General the Earl of Athlone. In addition to her position as royal consort, Princess Alice also served the British Empire as the National President of the Girl Guides from 1934-1939. She held various other honorary positions throughout her lifetime and was an Honorary Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. Princess Alice was a beloved member of the British royal family and her loss at the age of 97 will be deeply felt by her relatives, many friends, and the entire nation.
