Richard Gilliland, 71, died on Thursday, March 18, 2021. Richard was born in San Francisco, California, and maintained a close affinity for the city throughout his life. He received his undergraduate degree from University of California, Los Angeles before completing his Master's Degree in Physics from the University of Massachusetts. Throughout his career, Richard served as a university professor, lecturer, and associate dean at various institutions, including the California Institute of Technology and the University of Washington. He was an esteemed and much-loved presence in the world of academia, enjoying both the teaching and research sides. In his personal time, Richard was an avid traveler who embraced opportunities to explore the world around him. He was passionate about wildlife and the outdoors, and a passionate advocate of all types of scientific research. Richard was predeceased by his parents and is survived by his siblings, nieces, and nephews. He will be remembered as a devoted teacher, mentor, and loyal friend. His infectious enthusiasm for the advancement of science and research will be remembered the most.
