Richard Halsey Best, of Madison, WI, passed away on October 28, 2001 at the age of 91. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA on March 9, 1910 to John and Elizabeth Best. He was a 1938 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. During World War II, he served as a pilot and bank inspector for the US government. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Martha Best; their two sons, David and Robert; and their daughter Dianne Best-Romme. Richard was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing tennis, sailing, skiing, and swimming. He particularly enjoyed attending University of Pittsburgh football games and University of Wisconsin women's basketball games. He was a tireless advocate for education and the environment. He spent 12 years advocating for his local school district, serving two terms on the Madison School Board. He was also a leader in early efforts to protect Lake Mendota, volunteering for many years with Friends of Lake Mendota and other civic leaders. Richard was active in his church and the Masons, where he served in many roles over the years. Richard was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, whose calm, quiet nature was appreciated by all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
