It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Richard Winters, who passed away peacefully on January 2nd, 2011 at the age of 92. Richard was born in Pennsylvania in 1918 and moved to Idaho in the 1930s. Richard was a decorated veteran, having served as a lieutenant in the US Army Paratroopers during World War Two. He was highly decorated for his bravery and received the Distinguished Service Cross and two Purple Hearts after being wounded during combat operations in 1945. Richard was an avid outdoorsman, and he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and hiking in the mountains. He was an advocate for public lands and conservation. One of his greatest legacies was his work to preserve Idaho's wild places. He was a member of the Idaho backcountry Horsemen Organization and was active in his community. His memory will live on in those who were lucky enough to know him. He will be deeply missed.
