Ben Bradlee, acclaimed journalist and newspaper editor, passed away on October 21, 2014 at the age of 93. Born in 1921 in Boston, Massachusetts, he graduated Harvard University with a degree in English. Dubbed as a "giant of American journalism" by many of his colleagues, Bradlee served as a journalist and editor for almost his entire life, having worked for The Washington Post since 1965. During his nine-year tenure as editor in chief from 1968-1991, Bradlee pushed the paper into higher levels of national prominence, most notably with The Post's publication of the Watergate scandal. Bradlee's legacy as an editor carries on through the Ben Bradlee Editors Awards, given to successful student journalists in collegiate publications. Most recently in 2013, President Barack Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. He will be remembered for his journalistic ability and his passion for the trade that endures through the generations. Bradlee is survived by his beloved wife, Sally Quinn, and three children from a previous marriage: Ben Bradlee Jr., Marina Bradlee, and Quinn Bradlee.
