Robert Young, an award-winning actor who gained fame in the 1930s and 1940s for his roles in such iconic films as Boys Town, Northwest Passage, and Swiss Family Robinson, passed away on July 21, 1998, at the age of 91. Over the course of his expansive acting career, Mr. Young played a variety of roles, including romantic leads, comedic roles, and parental figures. Born in 1907 in Chicago, IL, he began his career as a radio commentator before signing with Metro-Goldwyn Mayer and appearing in his first film, The Black Orchid (1938). His memorable films go on to include The Forgotten Woman (1939), that features his Academy Award-nominated performance as the father of the central character, and The Force of Evil (1948), for which he was awarded the Cannes International Film Festival prize for Best Performance. In 1953 Mr. Young began his most famous role, playing the title character on the television series Father Knows Best. Young portrayed the character Jim Anderson with warmth and life experience for six years. He was twice awarded the Emmy for his performance. Mr. Young also starred in a number of television series. He could be seen in Window on Main Street (1961-1962), a sequel to Father Knows Best, Marcus Welby, MD (1969-1976). Mr. Young was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Elizabeth. He is survived by two sons and two daughters. He will always be remembered as a respected and beloved actor.
